Travertine is a natural stone that is a form of limestone and almost looks like marble. It is available in many earth colors, and has beautiful natural veining. It is less expensive than granite and some other marble types, but not the best suited for certain high traffic areas. Quartz is a man-made, highly durable stone. It is made up of natural silicon dioxide and synthetic materials, with approximately 93% consisting of loose quartz. It is then blended with a binder and pigment. As a result, it is available in a very wide range of colors and is formulated to give the appearance of natural stone such as granite or marble. Quartz is hard and less prone to denting and chipping than many other stones do to its flexible nature. However, high heat should be avoided since its resins can melt above 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
